Question 3

This is an investigation into the particulars of the choice of color depth as relevant to a specific digital darkroom setup. This investigation arises from the observation that differences can be detected between 8bit and 16bit scans of a single negative. Of issue now is the source of that difference, the nature of that difference, and the usefulness of that difference as applied to this setup.

Questions will be asked about these issues, and attempts will be made to satisfy those questions according to the principles that devolve from the need to ascertain whether or not I, as the investigator, am fooling myself. That need is expressed by these issues: what do I know and how do I know that I know it. For me, the satisfaction of those issues constitutes "good science"; others may disagree, but it works for me.

The first question begins with a description of the process of interest, the equipment and software used, and the particulars of use. From this description, questions will be framed for consideration. These questions will engage the issue of what physically occurs during, and as a result of, the various actions taken in the execution of the processes of usage. It is expected that further investigation into various aspects of these matters will be warranted. As such, they will be noted.

The second question involves the establishment of certain parameters of critical observation, and these will be derived in part from what is learned from the first question. In further part, there will be an identification of the parameters and methods by which the differences are determined and described. It is expected that further investigations will be warranted in these regards as well. Again, as such, they will be noted.

The third question will be entirely a matter of interpreting such answers to the first two as seem appropriate. An attempt will be made to substantiate the reasons for such interpretations, such that the reader might be enabled to recognize their relevance.

A conscientious attempt will be made to be thorough in the presentation of this material. Substantive questions that are raised herein and not adequately answered will undoubtedly exist, nonetheless. Those that are identified by the reader are welcomed by the author, who reserves the right to respond or ignore as seems reasonable to the author.
