Copacabana Synopsis: Groucho Marx (with his "real" rather than "reel" mustache) made his first solo film appearance away from his brothers in the uneven musical comedy Copacabana. Groucho plays two-bit theatrical agent Lionel Q. Devereaux, whose favorite client-indeed, his only client-is fireball Brazilian entertainer Carmen Novarro (Carmen Miranda). Hoping for a double commission, Devereaux gets Carmen two different singing jobs at the Copacabana nightclub, through the simple expedient of having Carmen wear a veil and pose as a French (!) chanteuse. Steve Hunt (Steve Cochran), manager of the Copa, falls in love with one of the Carmens, much to the dismay of pretty bookkeeper Anne (Gloria Jean, in one of her few adult film appearances). The film comes to life only during Miranda's hotcha musical numbers, and during a lengthy novelty ensemble piece, Kalmar and Ruby's "Go West Young Man", wherein Lionel Q. Devereaux unveils his lastest protégé-who turns out to be Groucho Marx in his traditional greasepaint moustache and eyebrows! While the combination of Groucho Marx, Carmen Miranda and Gloria Jean would seem to be an unwieldy one, the three stars got along famously: Groucho and Jean spent their spare time engaging in several serious talks about world events, while Marx admired Miranda because of her extenisve philanthropic work. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide Starring: Groucho Marx, Carmen Miranda, Andy Russell Director: Alfred E.
