SHIPPING:  We ship packages using the three major carriers. UPS (United Parcel Service), FEDEX (Federal Express) and USPS (United States Postal Service). Each one of these services has advantages over the other. When you come in to the store with your package we can give you the best price, and service, based on what type of package you are shipping.
Shipping costs are based on three things. Weight, size and destination (distance traveled). Smaller, lighter, and closer is NEARLY ALWAYS better than heavy, large and far away. Within the continental USA carriers have 7 or 8 shipping zones with Zone 8 being the furthest away. Each carrier calculates shipping costs slightly differently. The size of the package (longest side plus the girth of the package) and the weight usually determines the shipping cost of the package. Small packages (under 84 inches, Length + Girth) usually travel at their true weight when going "ground". Packages over 84 inches travel at one of two oversize rates. This means that they travel at the 30 lb rate regardless if they are less than 30 lbs. Over 30 lbs (small heavy boxes) travel at the actual weight. All UPS and FEDEX air packages travel at the dimensional rate. This dimensional rate is calculated based on the formula of Length x Width x Height,  divided by 194. Who thinks up these things? Packages to Alaska and Hawaii all travel air only.

These shipping costs change as you move from one zone to another. They also change when you move from regular ground service, to 3 day, two day and over night services.  It is difficult to estimate the cost of a package over the phone but thanks to computer technology we can give you a pretty close estimate of your shipping costs if you give us the following information.

Destination Zip Code
Size of the package (L x W x H)
Accurate weight (rounded UP to the nearest full pound)
$ Value of the package

With this information we will be able to give you a pretty good idea what your shipping costs will be. Keep in mind that many carriers have weight limits (usually 150 lbs) as well as size limits (remember the length + girth formula). The maximum practical shipping sizes are 165 inches for UPS, 130 inches for FEDEX and 108 for the US Postal Service. Larger packages will need to be sent freight. (We do this too)

FEDEX and UPS include $100.00 worth of insurance with each package. US Postal Service charges extra for all insurance.
FEDEX has Saturday pickup and delivery (for an additional charge). Packages mailed  US Postal Service travel on Saturday regardless.

Shipping pickup times are as follows.

Weekdays:
UPS at 3:00pm,  FEDEX EXPRESS at 3:45pm  FEDEX GROUND at 5:00pm
US Postal Service 4:40pm

 Saturdays:
FEDEX EXPRESS ONLY 10:30am. (Over-night packages only)
US Postal Service  12:15pm

PACKING

Packing items is not rocket science but needs to be done methodically and carefully. To do it properly is very time consuming and can be expensive, depending on the item that needs to be packed. We have a minimum packing charge of $2.00 plus materials. The packing cost estimates of each item is done on an individual basis and no quotes can be given over the phone. Two tough items to pack are pictures with glass and dinner services. These are the most delicate and if incorrectly packed do not hold up well in shipping. If you have an unusual item to ship call us we will be happy to give you advice on how to pack that treasured family heirloom to Aunt Sarah in Minnesota.

Many people prefer to pack their own articles and we can help here to. We have all the packing supplies you would need. Boxes of various shapes and sizes, bubble wrap, tape etc. Packing popcorn is available free to customers. All we ask is that when you get packing peanuts that you do not want, you bring them in to us for the next customer. A recycling system of sorts.

Packing 101 - When packing always use a strong box in good shape. Stay away from the old fruit boxes from the grocery store and liquor boxes. Fruit boxes are not designed to be used for this kind of shipping and liquor boxes need to be covered. Old computer and TV boxes are great for nearly all packing jobs. Make sure the box is big enough to allow at least 2 inches of packing peanuts around the items,  and between the items and the wall of the box. Packages containing multiple small items need to be individually wrapped or have the same distance (min. 2") between them. Use bubble wrap on glass items. Without bubble wrap protecting your home made jam your chances of Aunt Millie receiving them in good condition are slim. Avoid packing a heavy item (an antique clothing iron) and a fragile item (a ceramic doll). This combination does not travel well and can lead to disaster for the doll. However, the iron will survive unscathed. Stay away from newspaper as a packing material. It is not very good as it compacts easily and by the end of the trip is ½ the original size. Do not wrap your package in paper. It increases the chance of a corner coming loose and your package being destroyed by the bulk handling equipment. Use good quality packing tape. Try and avoid using duct tape if possible and never use masking tape.

Inside the box, especially if there are a number of small items, put a list of the contents and the name and address of who you are shipping it too and your name, address and phone #. This way they know that somewhere in those peanuts is one more small gift. You would be amazed at the "gifts" we find in the recycled peanuts. Many times the labels and addresses have been removed from the boxes or bags and we are unable to return them to their owners. Unfortunately sometimes they are part of some bigger gift and are of no use to anybody else and in some cases the recipient has had to reorder a part to get their gift to work.

When packing pictures use a picture box, Styrofoam sheets and bubble wrap. Tape the glass, cover the glass with cardboard sheets, then a 1" Styrofoam sheet and then bubble wrap it all. Your package should be about 4-5" thick at this point. Place it securely in a correctly sized picture box. Place fragile stickers on it. Fragile packages travel better by air than ground, as they are handled less. When doing large pictures you need to be extra careful and in some cases use a sheet of masonite over the glass as well.

When packing crockery, be sure to bubble wrap each piece and box 4 or 5 pieces together within the bigger box. Lots of peanuts between these individual boxes and the outside walls of the big box. Packed correctly crockery can travel without mishap.

Keep in mind that all carriers require that you pack the article correctly. If your package is damaged in shipping, please be sure to have the recipient keep all the packaging materials. The shipping carrier may require seeing these package materials before honoring any claim.

Always overfill the box with peanuts and pack them tightly. This will help avoid "settling" in transit.
