191.  Death Certificate, Vol. 39, Page 118, Number 1174, Gives age as being 77 yrs, 8 months, and 6 days.  Occupation as Glass decorator.  Father Tgnaz Knechtel and Mother Anna Zahn.  Residence 101 Birmingham Street, New Bedford, Mass.  He is widowed at the time of his death.[I suspect that Herman is either the son of this Ignaz or the grandson.  Assuming that Ignaz was born in the 1815-1820s and married around 1840-1845 - Herman would have been born late in that marriage.  Another possibility is that Ignatz had a  son who married one of the Zahns - but this would be way to coincidental.].

198.  Obituary, Elsa Knechtel, 104 FAIRHAVEN -- Elsa Knechtel, 104, a longtime resident of New Bedford who was employed for many years with a downtown bank, died Wednesday, Dec. 8, 1999, at Our Lady's Haven after an extended illness.  Born in a house on Grape Street in New Bedford, Miss Knechtel was the third child and only daughter of Herman and Johanna (Schiller) Knechtel, who came to this country in 1890 from Steinschoenau near the German and Austro-Hungarian border (now Kamenicky Senov in the Czech Republic). Her father was a glass artist who worked in New Bedford at the Pairpoint Corp.'s glassworks.  In her early years, Miss Knechtel, worked for a short time in Pairpoint's showroom, and later was a bookkeeper at Merchants Bank (later Baybank Merchants).  During the Depression, the family moved to Trenton, N.J., and Monaca, Pa., where the father found work as an artist and glass painter. Miss Knechtel also found employment in Monaca; she returned to New Bedford when the economy improved.  She rejoined Merchants Bank, where she was a check teller, and later was put in charge of savings and the Christmas Club department; she remained in that department until her retirement.  In retirement, she remained active until her 80s as treasurer of the Nearly New Shop at the YWCA.  On her 100th birthday in August 1995, Miss Knechtel received a birthday cake from her landlady, Helen Roy, and relatives took her out to dinner.  During her advanced years, Miss Knechtel lived alone in an apartment in the Roy home on Cottage Street, New Beford, for more than 20 years, receiving visits from a nurse and housekeeper. Earlier, she lived on Dartmouth Street.  Miss Knechtel was a member of Grace Episcopal Church, and at one time was active in the Order of the Eastern Star.  Survivors include her two greatnieces, Janet Johnson of West Boylston and Doris Knechtel of Newfane, Vt.; two great-nephews, John Knechtel of Orange and Brian Knechtel of Athol; a niece-in-law, Barbara Knechte.
