John Troutman
Brower
Pvt., Co. C, 74th
P.V.I.
John T. Brower was born May, 1845, to
Nathan and Catherine (Troutman) Brower of Jackson Township, Northumberland
County, Pennsylvania. He was the second child of five and the eldest son. His occupation
was that of a farmer until he enlisted on March 14, 1865, in Harrisburg for a
period of 1 year.
On
the Muster and Descriptive Roll for the 74th Reg’t Pennsylvania, he
is described as 5’8’’ tall with light hair, blue eyes and a fair complexion. Sent
to Camp Curt in PA, he is listed there on March 29, 1865. (This is probably
where he would learn the jody that he would teach his granddaughter, my
grandmother, about how to march. She, would later tell me it went, “Hay foot,
straw foot, belly full of bean soup. Left, right, MARCH!”)
He
was mustered-out with the Company on August 29, 1865, in Clarksburg, West
Virginia. As per G.O. 101, he retained his arms and equipment at a cost of
$6.00.
Returning
to Jackson Township (Herndon), he would become a retail merchant and marry
Willimina (Zartman) circa 1870. Together they would have 2 children, Mary and
John Jr. Willimina would die (presumably in the birth of John Jr. in March of
1874) and John Sr. would marry again, circa 1880, to Sarah Latshau.
John Troutman Brower would die, after a long illness, in
May, 1910, three days after turning 65. He is buried in the Herndon Cemetery,
Northumberland County, Pennsylvania.
