Charles Stowater
Charles Stowater enrolled in Co. E, 35th PA Inf,14 Sept 1861, Pittsburgh.
He gave his age as 39 & said he was born in Preiberg(?), Saxony. In July,
Aug, Sept, Oct & Nov 1862 was hospitalized in Wheeling & discharged for
disability 8 Nov 1862 in Cumberland, MD. At that time, his age is given as 49,
which is believed to be a mistake. Although the information was taken from his
military record.
He married Mary King, probably
shortly after 1850. She was some 17 years older than he was & I do not
believe there were children, unless she had a child by a previous marriage.
(The 1880 census has a granddaughter, aged 25 living with them.)
He evidently applied for a pension
after his wife's death in 1884, but died (1890) before he was able to take the
physical, so it was denied. According to the attorney, there were no children.
He is buried in a family plot in the Allegheny Cemetery, sec. 31, lot 18.
His residences were Wilkins Twp., Collins Twp., & Coleman Station...his main occupation was grocer.
