Faust Films applied for an NEA grant in June to fund a DV production. We will find out in September whether we will receive funding for the project. If we receive revenue in September, our first feature production will begin November 1, 2001.

This feature is based on the fairy tale "The Robber Bridegroom." While the story is based on this tale, the setting is quite different. The story will take place in a trailer park in Forks, Washington. All characters are based on people who live in this remote logging town. The script for "Robber" is only half completed at this time, but it appears to be either a dark comedy or a rather twisted mello-drama...kind of a David Lynch meets John Waters thing.

11/9/01 UPDATE: The past few months have provided us with bad news and good news. The bad news is that we were turned down for the NEA grant, so the project outlined above needs to be put on hold until funding for a feature length project becomes available. The good news is that we wrote and began filming a short last month. Although it is being shot on costly 16mm film, the budget for this project is far smaller than The Robber Bridegroom.

This 16mm short called "The Vegan" (see photos on the left) tells the story of an animal rights inspired vegan who shows her true colors when the sun goes down. The day to night transition is punctuated by changing from highly saturated, softly lit color images to low, harshly lit black and white ones. The musical score also reflects this change. As our protagonist slowly shows her true murderous, vegetable butchering nature, the music evolves from gay to frightening. The final image is that of a kindly farmer, gently petting and feeding his cow.

So far we have filmed all color scenes and will finish the black and white scenes on 12/1/01. At this time, we plan on having the film processed at Alpha Cine Lab here in Seattle, Rank transfered at Film and Video Transfers, Inc., and edited on Final Cut Pro. We will update this page as progress is made.

If you have any questions about this or other Faust Film productions, feel free to email us at sdtaylor@olypen.com It is often gratifying to chat with other filmmakers, and we are always very open to making new friends!

12/17/01 UPDATE: We shot all the black and white scenes on the first as scheduled. It went really well, so I'm hopeful we will have a good film. We only now have to shoot the final "cow" scene, and while we have tried to get this one in the can, we have had to reschedule twice due to heavy rain. I'm going to shoot this scene come hell or high water on 12/22, as the deadline for the Seattle film festival is March 1st. More updates as they happen!

12/31/01 UPDATE: As the photos to the left show, we got the cow scenes done on time! We sent the film to the lab and were told it would be back by 1/9/02. Then, without looking at it, (for fear of scratching) I have to send it off to be Rank transfered to DV. I should have it back in a week and ready to edit. That gives us a month to get the music scored!

1/8/02 UPDATE: A new project was shot on the 5th of Januanry. This was a mini-documentary on a local collector of odd things. We shot about 6 hours of DV with several cameras (it is amazing how much less expensive it is to shoot video). Anyhow, the shoot ended with an hour and a half long, tightly miced interview with the man during which he talked about his difficult childhood and how he began collecting such odd things. I won't go into detail about his collection, (you will have to see the movie) but it includes many letters and art he has collected from famous serial killers. I will try to get some images from this project up in the next few days.

1/18/02 UPDATE: Well, as you can see, I have some shots from the above interview posted to the left. We ordered a new computer with DV Raptor and Adobe Premier yesterday, and should have it in about 10 days. Then on to editing! The Vegan film returned from the lab and was sent to another lab in Northridge California to be transfered to DV. There will be lots to do when the new editing system arrives! Also, we are participating in Jon Jost's Worldview 2002 project. Go to http://www.worldview2002.net for more information on this great undertaking.

3/5/02 UPDATE: Boy, it has been a long time since I updated this! The Vegan is done! And, I got it off in time for the Seattle Film Festival, although I don't think it will get in. Perhaps smaller festivals will like it, however. You can see it online if you go back to the main page of Faust Films and click the "completed films" tab. Sorry about the quality of the streaming video versian...I'm still learning web stuff.

So, now we are busy editing the other project and are writing a new short. The Vegan showed me how much I like black and white film, especially the Ilford we used, so the next project will be all done on that film stock. Check back for more updates!

10/8/02 UPDATE: Okay, so I'm not great at keeping my website updated! In past 7 months, we finished another 16mm b/w short called "The Dance." This film was quite a bit more demanding than the last one. I've put up some photos taken from the "making of" video of the film and if I get some extra time, I'll include some actual screen shots. Meanwhile, if you go to the "Completed" projects tab from the main page, you can download a windows media player copy of the film (or, if you have a fast internet connection, you can just click it and watch it stream.) To download it to your computer, right click "The Dance" and choose "Save Target As."
