  1. Finding the Prepositional Phrase

 

A prepositional phrase is a word or phrase that shows the relation between the noun that it takes as an object and some other word in the sentence.

Some common prepositions:

Aboard                        amidst              beneath            down                of                     since                 with

Above              around              beyond             except              on                    to                     without

The preposition together with its object and the modifiers of the object is called a prepositional phrase.

             The boy fell off the boat.  (off is the preposition, boat is its object, the modifies boat.)

            Helen went to the corner store.  (to is the preposition, store is its object, the and corner modifies store.)

            The man with the boot, cares not wear he steps.  (with is the preposition, boot is its object, the modifies boot.)

 

 

Directions: write the prepositional phrases in each sentence.

 

  1. He left without notice.
  2. The dog slept beneath the cot.
  3. Because of the heat, we went home at two o’clock.
  4. Beyond the plains, lay the snow-covered hills.
  5. They have been there since dawn.
  6. Outside the city, signs of gardening were everywhere.
  7. Throughout the night the wind howled about the house.
  8. They will go by way of Atlanta.
  9. Amidst the confusion, I heard the sound of a siren.
  10. A stream of water trickled down the side of the mountain.
  11. An account of the race will be in the newspaper.
  12. Trade-ins are usually accepted at Fernstone Motors.
  13. Bonita is the last person in line.
  14. Mary Pickford starred in silent films.
  15. The library has rooms for meetings.
  16. On our doorstep was a lost puppy.
  17. Each of us has a blue sweater.
  18. My sister slept during the movie.
  19. Against the fence was propped the scarecrow.
  20. The monkey climbed into the hammock and started swinging.
