  1. Finding the Prepositional Phrase

 

A prepositional phrase is a word or phrase that shows the relation between the noun that it takes as an object and some other word in the sentence.

Some common prepositions:

Aboard            amidst             beneath            down               of                     since                with                

About              among             between           during              off                   throughout            within             

Above             around             beyond            except              on                    to                     without           

According to   as for               but (meaning         except)            for                   on account of 

toward             near                 Across             at                     from                out                   under              

onto

The preposition together with its object and the modifiers of the object is called a prepositional phrase.

             The boy fell off the boat.  (off is the preposition, boat is its object, the modifies boat.)

            Helen went to the corner store.  (to is the preposition, store is its object, the and corner modifies store.)

            The man with the boot, cares not wear he steps.  (with is the preposition, boot is its object, the modifies boot.)

 

 

Directions: write the prepositional phrases in each sentence.

 

  1. They put the package on the table.
  2. Around the corner came the car.
  3. Aboard the ship were many college students.
  4. They camped among the palms.
  5. Everything went according to plan.
  6. John fell off the dock.
  7. During the winter we went to Miami Beach.
  8. All came to the party but Jack and his sister.
  9. We walked slowly along the beach and into the clubhouse.
  10. Behind us lay the valley covered with deep snow.
  11. The game was canceled on account of rain.
  12. Amid the shouting of the crowd, Jerry’s cries were not heard.
  13. Did you call regarding the apartment?
  14. Beneath the window was a garden of flowers.
  15. All remained except Mr. and Mrs. Shaw.
  16. They all went aboard the train.
  17. By means of code, the spies relayed their messages to headquarters.
  18. He told us about the plans for our vacation.
  19. Is this the first day of spring.
  20. They will remain until June or July.
