Using Verbs Unit Test

 

Part 1: Action Verbs or Linking Verbs. 

Write the verb; then write “action” or “linking”.


1. Jane pinned a gardenia in her hair.
2. The kite floated high above the field.
3. The thorns scratched his hand and wrist.
4. The sun is our source of light and heat.
5. The ball smashed into the pins.
6. Your voice sounds harsh today.
7. George tasted the caramel icing
8. The apricot juice tastes sweet.
9. Regina became impatient with the project.
10. He carved little boats out of soap.
11. The wind grew chilly in the evening.
12. The villagers grow corn in their gardens.
13. Dust collected in the corners.
14. Somewhere in the woods an owl hooted.

15. Stella curled the paper ribbons on the package.

 

Part 2: Helping Verbs and Main Verbs

Write the helping verbs; then write the main verb.

 

1.     Nobody has heard from Nick lately.

2.         I will certainly take the job.

3.         Molly has almost finished the dishes.

4.         A drop is sliding down the glass.

5.         Ginger did not recognize him.

6.         I should have tried harder.

7.         The river must have thawed.

8.         Jim has slowly been improving.

9.         That crow has cawed all morning.

10.     The plan has not yet been approved.

 

 

Part 3: Verb Tenses

Write the verb; then write the tense.

 

1.     Stacy will tell us about the camp.

2.         Why has your brother left the party?

3.         Judy carried the dog to the vet.

4.         I enjoy art fairs.

5.         What had you said to her?

6.         Will someone sweep the porch?

7.         I shall see you soon.

8.         Larry will have recovered by next week.

9.         Snakes coil quickly.

10.     Betsy has washed her hair.

 

Part 4: Progressive Forms.

Change the verb of each sentence to the progressive form.

 

1.     I will collect the money tonight.

2.         Jeff works at the gas station.

3.         Margo brushed the setter’s coat.

4.         We had heard the noise all week.

5.         That lamp flickers badly.

 

Part 5: Principal Parts of Regular Verbs.

Write the past and past participle parts of these verbs.

 

1.     dance

2.         pitch

3.         toss

4.         play

5.         act

 

Part 6: Irregular Verbs.

Write the correct verb from the two verbs given.

 

1.     The team (did, done) surprisingly well this season.

2.         The crowd had (broke, broken) up into groups.

3.         The robin has (chose, chosen) a good spot for a nest.

4.         Winter had clearly (began, begun).

5.         Wendy (drank, drunk) the chocolate malt.

6.         The coach has (gave, given) Bill another chance.

7.         May had always (rode, ridden) with a western saddle.

8.         He (went, gone) to the party already.

9.         The puppy had (ate, eaten) the leftovers.

10.     Mom has (froze, frozen) some lemonade ice cubes.

11.     The ball had (fell, fallen) into the sand trap.

12.     She (ran, run) for that office twice before.

13.     Lisa (saw, seen) the movie already.

14.     He had (sang, sung) his solo off-key.

15.     I have just (spoke, spoken) with Manuel.

16.     Someone had (stole, stolen) the spare tire.

17.     We (swam, swum) against the current.

Part 7: Active and Passive Verb Forms.

Rewrite each sentence. Change the verb form.  If the verb is active, change it to passive.  If the verb is passive, change it to active.

 

1.     Everybody heard the broadcast.

2.         Raffle tickets were sold by the class.

3.         Wiley Post made the first solo flight around the world.

4.         The house was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.

 

Part 8: Troublesome Verbs.

Choose the correct verb.

 

1.     We (set, sat) on the beach too long and got burned.

2.         Nell (set, sat) her knapsack by the tree.

3.         Tim had (lain, laid) down on an anthill.

4.         Gene (lay, laid) a quilt over the baby.

5.         (Leave, Let) me borrow your football.

6.         Karen has (let, left) her hair grow long.

7.         The blimp (rose, raised) slowly in the air.

8.         (Raise, Rise) your left knee to your nose.

9.         His temper quickly (rose, raised) to boiling.

10.     The record store has (risen, raised) its prices.

11.     The hikers (lay, laid) down to rest by the river.

12.     Yes, you (can, may) borrow my sled.

13.     You must (learn, teach) your dog not to bite.

14.     I (taught, learned) myself some Spanish lessons.
