Pt 5 Direct Objects 1

 

The word that receives the action of a verb is called the Direct Object. First, find the subject; next, find the verb. Then ask whom or what after the verb. The answer will be the Direct Object.

                Maria bought six oranges.                 Who or What are we talking about?                       Maria is the subject.

                                                                                What was Maria doing?                                                Bought is the verb.

                                                                                Maria bought whom or what?                     Oranges is the Direct Object.

 

Directions: For each sentence, write the SUBJECT, VERB, and the DIRECT OBJECT. Not every sentence will have a D.O.

  1. Who wants these old posters?
  2. I carefully answered every question on the test.
  3. Our school sponsored a carnival last spring.
  4. We ordered spaghetti for dinner.
  5. The salesclerk wrapped my package beautifully.

 

Watch out! The D.O. answers “whom” or “what” – not “how.”

 

  1. The flag hung limply from the pole.
  2. We hung a wreath on our door.
  3. Everyone sang our class song.
  4. We cheered loudly.
  5. I worked the problem easily.
  6. Both blankets slipped off.
  7. Dad slipped his key into the lock.
  8. The firefighters worked hard.
  9. Yvette bought a magazine after school.
  10. We cheered the team’s victory.
  11. The scuba divers found the shipwreck.
  12. Bruce won the race.
  13. The pilot steered his craft onto the airfield.
  14. I am studying science now.
  15. The girls have carved a big pumpkin.
