Extra Credit: Using the LCD projector to display pictures, graphs, or visuals to enhance the speech. This might best be done with a power point slide presentation. Basically, think of pictures or such that show what you are talking about. One should not simply describe the pictures, the speech should stand by itself; the pictures are used to make the speech more dynamic.

Speech 3 assignment:

Think of a current events topic or issue, preferably one that generates strong feelings and has more than one side to it.  First, do some research on the topic, in order to gain as much information as possible and avoid being ill-informed.

The goal of this speech is to persuade the audience to agree with the viewpoint offered on the chosen issue.  But for this persuasive speech to be successful, the speaker must demonstrate that he or she understands clearly the reasons why others may hold an opposing viewpoint.  Therefore, excellent supporting details need to be used to back up the argument.  Just as important, however, the argument must be presented in a manner that will not alienate the audience.

An outline of this speech might follow this pattern:

1. Introduction:

            1. lead statement

            2. explain the lead

            3. overview of the topic

            4. thesis statement

2. First body paragraph, states and elaborates on your readers’ most likely objection to your position.

3. Second body paragraph, states and elaborates on your readers’ second most likely objection to your position.

4. Transition paragraph

5. Third body paragraph, states and elaborates on your THIRD best argument for your position.

6. Fourth body paragraph, states and elaborates on your SECOND best argument for your position.

7. Fifth and longest body paragraph, states and elaborates on your BEST argument for your position.

8. Conclusion

            1. restate the thesis in different words

            2. briefly restate three reasons of support

            3. make text-to-(text/self/world) connection

4. call to action

            5. hook back to the lead statement
