Outline and Notes From Three Sources
10
Speech
3 assignment:
Think
of a current events topic or issue, preferably one that generates strong
feelings and has more than one side to it.
First, do some research on the topic, in order to gain as much
information as possible and avoid being ill-informed. Find at least three good sources (newspapers, magazines, books, or reliable internet sites). Take notes from each source as ideas are
gathered that can be used in the speech.
These notes will be turned in after the speech is completed. After gathering information on the topic,
formulate an opinion, with reasons supporting the opinion. Create an outline for the speech,
which will also be turned in.
The
goal of this speech is to persuade the audience to agree with the viewpoint
offered on the chosen issue. For the
purpose of this assignment, one might assume that the audience consists of
people who hold the opposing viewpoint.
Therefore, excellent supporting details need to be used to back up the
argument. Just as important, however,
the argument must be presented in a manner that will not alienate the
audience.
An
outline of this speech might follow this pattern:
I.
Introduction:
1. lead
statement
2. explain
the lead
3. overview
of the topic
4. thesis

II.

3. commentary

IV.

2. show the
limitations of this objection, show how this objection is incorrect or wrong.
3. supporting
detail/ elaboration
4. commentary on the limitations of
this objection
V.

1. restate
the thesis in different words
2. briefly
restate three reasons of support
3. make
text-to-world/ call to action
