Directions: Answer each question with a complete sentence. It is best to incorporate the question as part of the answer.

1. In your own words, write a summary of the third section. Include three main events in the summary.

2. What is “selection?” Describe how this is done in the camp.

3. Eliezer was 15 and a student, but he lies about both. What did he say?

4. Why do you think Eliezer lied during the selection?

5. Eliezer interrupts his narrative with a moving reflection of the impact of his first night in the camp, “Never shall I …”

Turn to that quote and write down what died within Eliezer that night.

6. In this section of the narrative, Eliezer is separated from his mother and sister, whom he never sees again. They are never mentioned again in Night beyond this section. Why do you think the author never mentions them again?

7. Contrast Eliezer’s faith in God with that of the other prisoners and his father.

8. No one believed Moishe the Beadle. No one believed the screaming lady of the cattle car. Why should we, the readers, believe and care about what the author has to say?
