Course Requirements:

  • A passing grade in each semester of English 10 requires successful completion of 4 essays and 2-3 speeches.

Materials for class everyday:                                                                     Materials you need to have access to at home:

-Paper                                                                                                                  - access to Internet (website and email)

-Thumb drive for saving digital work

-Pencils/pens

                - Class-issued literature

Books/paperbacks:

Students will be issued paperbacks for the novels we read and are responsible for bringing the book to class everyday while it is being read and discussed. Fines will be assessed for lost or damaged books.

Grading Procedure:

Grades are made up of several components.

  • Writing assignments include both essays and short answer worksheets. Both writing assignments may be rewritten for higher scores if turned in on time, meet basic requirements, and if the first score is not satisfactory.
  • Quizzes and tests covering literature are added to the total grade.
  • Talks and/or speeches are required for each triad.
  • 50 points are awarded for behavior. A student loses points through the infraction of rules. It is felt that students who behave, add to the positive climate of the class and more learning can take place. Those who disrupt the learning environment prevent me from teaching and students from learning. That negative behavior may affect the academic grade.
  • Vocabulary tests will also be added to the total grade.

A percentage is tabulated based on all recorded grades. Percentages are converted to a letter grade based on English department guidelines.

GRADING SCALE:

above 100% A+                         88% - 89% B+                     78% - 79%   C+                   68%-69 % D+

93% - 100% A                             83% - 87% B                        73% - 77%   C                      60%-67%  D

90% - 92% A                          80% - 82% B                  70% - 72%   C                below 60% F

Daily Work/Essays/Speeches:

·         Daily work assigned is due 1 day after being assigned.

·         Late work will be marked down 50% of earned score.

·         Make-Up Work: is due after the number of days missed plus 1.

·         Essays are due on the due date. If absent on the due date, student can email the essay to the teacher on that due date for full credit. Essays turned in after the due date, regardless of being absent, are late.

·         Speeches are due on the due date assigned to the particular student. Several students will be assigned to present on each particular day. Speeches completed after the due date, regardless of being absent, are late.

For daily work, time is given to work in the classroom. Many students complete and turn in their work while in class. Some students take more time for various reasons. Students receive full credit if the assignment is turned in within one day of being assigned. When absent, the assignment is due after the number of days missed plus one.  If an assignment is not turned in within one day of being assigned, the score recorded is zero until it is completed. Overdue assignments may be made up at any time during the current semester for half credit. For example, a student can make up a missed assignment from the first triad during the third triad. Assignments turned in on time, that meet basic criteria, can be completed a second time for a possible higher grade.

It is the student’s responsibility to come in to school early, stop by during lunch, or complete the assignment as homework if more time is needed to complete work. Most assignments can be accessed from the class website. Assignments may be turned in through email.

Academic Integrity:

Academic dishonesty includes cheating on a test, falsifying data, misrepresenting the work of others as your own, and helping another student cheat or plagiarize. Academic dishonesty will result in a grade of zero on that particular assignment; serious infractions or repeat of infractions may result in failure of the course.

Academic Saturday School:

Students missing required assignments will be referred to the office for Academic Saturday School until the assignment is completed.
