Huckleberry Finn wkst 1

Chapters 1- 10

Directions: Answer each question with a complete sentence. Incorporate the question as part of the answer.

1. Huck is a somewhat marginal character in the town of St. Petersburg, who, although he is white, (and used to be poor), is out of touch and unacceptable with civilized society. Who is Huck living with, and why is he living there?

2. All the boys take a vow to kill the family of any member of the gang who reveals the gang’s secrets. This nearly disqualifies Huck, since he doesn’t have much of a family. But Huck offers up Miss Watson. Why is this somewhat ironic? (think about Injun Joe and the Widow Douglas story from Tom Sawyer.)

3. Compare the money given to Jim for the candles, to the money offered to one of the boys who gets homesick and threatens to tell the group’s secrets.

4. Huck goes to Jim for advice from the hairball. Jim wants money, and Huck gives him a fake quarter. Ironically, Huck gets a fake story. What does Jim tell Huck about Pap?

5. Why does the new judge in town refuse to let Judge Thatcher and the Widow Douglas gain custody of Huck? Wouldn’t Huck be better off with them than with Pap?

6. Contrast Pap with the mixed-race man who visits the town. List three distinct differences.

7. What does Huck do to cover up the fact that he is running away from Pap?

8. Huck hides out on Jackson Island for days and then is shocked. Who does he meet and what shocks him?

9. A house floats down the flooded river, with a dead man inside. Why doesn’t Jim let Huck look at the dead man?

10. What happened with the snake on the island? What is the symbolism of this part of the story to Jim and Huck?
