Hello all tennis players & supporters:

We had a great winter meeting, with about 46 people enjoying dinner and the silent auction at Dungeness Golf Course on December 7th.  The evening raised $456, bringing our current fundraising total for the Erickson Park courts to $21,581.  Thank you to Rosemary Moorhead, Becky Lupo & Sandy Schultz for all their preparations for the evening, and to everyone who attended!

At our winter meeting a year ago, we really didn’t know how we would do at raising $20,000, but we took the leap and made the commitment.  Since then, the project has gone magnificently – we should be set for bids & construction in early 2007, and a grand opening in summer of 2007.  We still would like to include lighting in the initial construction phase, so we are continuing to look for potential sources of funding for that, which is estimated to be around $50,000 for lighting on all four courts.

A list of donors to the court project is attached.  A huge thank you to our Grand Slam sponsors: Olympic Electric & Lakeside Industries!  Several other companies also donated: Dungeness Valley Creamery at the Gold Level, and Mill Creek Construction and Westsound Bank at the Silver level.  Please support those companies!

We still have 2 grand slam sponsorships available at the $2500 level.  The main perk for a Grand Slam donor is that they get to have a banner up on the Race Street fence throughout court construction – probably about 6 months worth of high-visibility advertising.  If you have an idea of a company that would make a good Grand Slam Sponsor, please talk to them, or talk to Laurel about it.  (We will not accept Grand Slam sponsorship from 2 competing companies, so no other electric or asphalt companies…)

One person I should have thanked at the meeting and didn’t is Dave Shargel.  He has sat on the Parks, Recreation & Beautification Commission for 4 years, and has advocated for tennis interests. He is now the chair of that committee.  Getting the $100,000 from the city for the court repairs is a huge achievement, and we will probably never know how big of a part having Dave working on the inside may have played in that.

Thank you to everyone for supporting this project, and making it happen!  I believe it will make a significant impact on Port Angeles in ways that go beyond tennis participation.

In other business, the Most Improved Player Awards for 2006 went to David Godfrey, and in a historic tie, to Stacia Bibler & Casi Fors for the women.  Great work on your games, players!

The Fall League winners were the “A” LOB-sters: Allison Hastings, Brenda Landstrom, Stu Sherman, & Dave Shargel; and the “B” Pet-Friendly: Becky Lupo, Sandy Schultz, Gene Turner & Carl Strunk.  The prizes are $20 gift certificates to either Big 5 or Tennis Warehouse.  Tennis Warehouse donated $60 in prizes, so please support them as well.  (I know a few of you are supporting them quite nicely already!)

The PTC board has changed the membership year to match the calendar year, and run from January through December.  To get on that schedule, we are extending the memberships that began in July 2006 (our current memberships) to run through December 2007.  So if you haven’t renewed your membership yet, buying one now will still get you a complete year of exciting tennis events & activity!  (The rest of you can cross out the June, 30 2007 expiration date on those cool bag-tags, and write in Dec 31, 2007.)

Our next monthly business meeting is scheduled for Dec 18th.  We’re not sure yet if we’re having that one, so call Laurel or check the website if you are thinking of coming to it.  In 2007, our first meeting will be January 15th (MLK day) at 6:30 pm at the Port Angeles library.

Look for an Aussie Open Big-Screen event in January (save your pocket change for wagers…), and hope to see you on the courts!
