Newsletter, April 4, 2008

Hi tennis players,

In between the recent snow storms there have been a few days that could be called “spring-like” without stretching the truth too far, which must mean it is again tennis season for the “seasonal” players among us!

There is still time to sign up for the Spring Doubles League, with play starting on April 12th.  The entry form and more information is available at http://www.olypen.com/peninsulatennisclub/08_Spring_League.htm.  If you wish to sign up and your entry will not be received in the mail by Sunday, please email peninsulatennisclub@olypen.com  or call Christy at 417-6724 to let us know the entry is on the way.

We have been getting a lot of questions from people who are not available for all four Saturdays of the league.   If you or your partner is unable to play on your regularly scheduled match day you may ask your opponents to reschedule.  However, if they prefer to play the match at the scheduled time, it is up to you to find a substitute of like ability. If you reschedule, you must get scores in by the next scheduled match. Also, to clarify, it is a completely mixed league – teams may be made up of any gender players, and will be grouped according to ability.

Please consider playing in the league, even if you consider yourself a non-competitive player.  The league is intended to get players out playing with new people, and the more teams participating, the better the format works.

Community Tennis continues, with all players welcome to drop in for recreational doubles play at Erickson Park (4th & Race Street, Port Angeles) on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday mornings at 9:30, and at Sequim High School on Sundays at noon.  At Erickson Park, the city has installed a new backboard on the spectator blacktop area east of the courts.  This should be useful for players to warm-up against, if they have to wait to get into a game.

It is time again for our spring litter pick up on Hwy 101.  We need volunteers to pick up litter on Saturday, April 19th, beginning at 9am.  We have picked up litter twice, with about 15 different people helping, some helping twice.  If you haven’t participated yet, please come out and help us.    The clean-up job gets a little easier each time we do it, and with 6 or 8 volunteers, it will only take about 2 hours to complete. Besides, last time one of the workers found a large sum of money in the ditch!   If you can help, please email the club at peninsulatennisclub@olypen.com, and we will send more instructions closer to the work time.

The City of Port Angeles adult tennis lessons begin on May 1st.  There are classes for players from beginner level to 3.5 to 4.0. A full class schedule is available at http://www.olypen.com/peninsulatennisclub/PA_lessons.pdf.  To register for classes, complete the form at http://ci.port-angeles.wa.us/PDFs/Recreation/RegistrationForm.pdf. and bring to the Recreation Office at the Vern Burton Center, or mail to

            Recreation Department, City of PA
            PO Box 1150

 Port Angeles, WA 98362

Please specify on the form what class and session you are signing up for. You may call Laurel at 808 – 0924 if you would like more information on any of the programs.

Monthly business meetings are now held on the second Wednesday of every month. Our next meeting will be Wednesday, April 9th, at 6:30 pm at the Port Angeles Library.  Anyone interested is welcome to attend.

See you on the courts!
