Minutes from the PTC meeting on February 24, 2005 with Glenn Cutler, City of Port Angeles, Director of Public Works

David Shargel, Glenn Wiggins, Rosemary Moorhead and Bob Doherty met with Glenn Cutler, Director of Public Works for City of PA on Feb 24, 2005 to discuss the state of disrepair of the public tennis courts in PA.

Rosemary Moorhead submitted the following meeting summary via email:

I gave some history of the Club, city involvement with the courts for the last 30 yrs., community needs of courts at Erickson, etc., as we discussed at our meeting.  I mentioned our asking to be put into the 2004 agenda for improvements on the courts and a covered court possibility as you and I had discussed with Mark Connelly several years back.   Glenn checked the priority list in his books.  We were not on the 2004 agenda.   The next possible date the recreation department had for court improvements was far into the future, though they had some small amount for present court repairs.   Glenn Cutler showed us a form they are using for placing projects on the agenda for the Parks Board and then on to the City Council. He will send a copy of this form to Shargel.  We need to use it to get on their agenda for consideration.  We can also attach the information that Laurel put together to this form. I suppose any other information we have to offer to have them seriously consider us.  They rate this form with a point system that looks at where the need is, where the money is coming from, grants, how much money and help will the tennis community contribute, etc. The more we can put up financially, the more they will move us up on the "do list".  In March a general meeting will be held on the possible sites for the pool.  Watch for this and we might want representation there if public input is part of that forum.  He indicated that nothing is on the agenda for eliminating the existing courts at Erickson.  I think we made our case that Erickson courts need to be made playable and why.  He asked for a point person for him to discuss the court particulars.  We named Laurel Cripe as the appropriate person.  Dave Shargel will give Laurel an update when she returns.  I feel we need to have a Board meeting as soon as possible to look over the form and start an action plan that seriously looks at fund raising.  This form has to be back to the city by April.  I suggest you speak with the others who attended the session with Cutler to get their viewpoint and if I have left out something important to be passed on to you all.  Thanks, Rosemary

David Shargel submitted the following account, via email:

Roger was sick, so I filled in, with Rosemary, Glenn Wiggins and Bob D. at the meeting with Glenn Cutler. He asked for $$ amounts, and I verbally gave him some of the figures Laurel had e-mailed. It looked to us like P.T.C. is going to have to come up with some $$, maybe as much as 1/3 or 1/2 of the total (much of it might be "in kind" by tennis playing contractors) to convince the city council and the commission to put this on the A or the B list of items of importance. There is a small amount the city has budgeted to court improvement this year (maybe  $5,000). Glenn is going to e-mail me a pdf file of a form that we need to fill out giving amounts, why important, etc. to present to the council/commission in April. We have the information, just need to use the traditional format.
