February 20, 2006 - Monthly Business Meeting. The Peninsula Tennis Club holds monthly business meetings the third Monday of every month at 6:30 pm at the Port Angeles Library meeting room. Present: All officers and about 15 people total. Laurel opened the meeting. The majority of the meeting was taken up with discussions
by Laurel, Christy, and Bob on topics from classes they attended at the
Community Development Workshop in California. Thanks to donations from the USTA,
all three were able to attend the workshop for $671. 1. We need an organizational values list. 2. What information do we give to new people interested in joining the club? 3. Fund raising topics, Raise some money from our organization first Make direct contact with donors 501 3c status is a major project to get—one alternative is to connect with another organization which already has this status. We need a strategic fund raising plan Maintain contacts with donors and update them often In kind donations, such as construction equipment, are as good as cash 4. Use the media to boost our program, get to know the sports editors and think outside the sports sections to others such as the Women’s’ and Things to Do sections. 5. Put on a Welcome Back tennis event. The USTA is sponsoring 50 around the country this year. 6. You don’t have to be a super star player to coach. There are methods and equipment available to make it easier to start out beginning players. A light weight larger ball was shown at the meeting as was information on a Hit and Learn stand which can be used to teach proper hitting position and strokes. Laurel wanted to know if there is interest in setting up a World Team Tennis format league. For $350 we could join the WTT organization and send winners from our league on to the next level of competition. Another new USTA program is cardio tennis. Our regular business meeting will be the 3rd Monday of the month. Becky, on short notice, gave us the treasurer’s report. Savings $6027. CD $4500. Checking $268. The girl’s tennis team begins practice at the high school courts on the 27th of February so the afternoon open sessions will have to move to the college or to the courts on Race st. The college still has major construction going on making it difficult to find parking so it was suggested that club members clean off the Race st. courts and give them a try. Members at the meeting volunteered to do that the next afternoon with play to follow. Laurel gave us an update of repairs needed to the Erickson tennis courts. They are basically sound but are sloped wrong and need drainage installed. They need to be brought up to USTA standards for us to get up to 20% of construction costs donated by the USTA. A surprising topic which came to our attention lately is that some community members want to build indoor courts perhaps on Erickson court location. These courts would then be donated to the city to be run by the YMCA. There will be a meeting with the people involved on March first. Bob has found a source for club informational signs to put on fences of all city courts giving perspective players info on the club email site and a contact phone number. It was motioned and approved that after permission is gotten to put them up that we buy 8 of the $28 dollar signs. 2006 Calendar:
Meeting adjourned at 8:30 Minutes submitted by Carl Strunk
