Minutes from the Meeting of February 10, 2005
The meeting was held at the home of Rosemary Moorhead. In attendance were President Roger Goettling, Treasurer Lee Shames, Secretary Marie Watford, Bob Dougherty, Laurel Cripe, Dave Shargel, Rosemary Moorhead, Sandy Schultz, Jeff Brown, Karen Chrisman, Bill Larue, and new member Becky Lupo.
Rosemary brought to the club’s attention the meeting to be held on February 24 with Glenn Cutler, head of Public Works for the city of Port Angeles. There was much discussion about what the Club wants from the City. It was agreed that we want “public outdoor courts not associated with the schools”, even though we wish to continue to have access to school courts. The conclusion is that we want no net loss of tennis courts; that tennis has long been ignored and forgotten, and the Club will present a plan to Mr. Cutler, detailing our interests and wishes for the future of City and public courts. (Minutes from meeting with Glenn Cutler available here.)
The best area for the courts, with the most likely agreement by the city, is to improve and then maintain the courts at Erickson Park. Redoing the courts from five to four to increase between court spacing, resurfacing them, adding a storage building, and possible bleachers along the East fence for a noise break were all options the Club hopes to pursue. The Club will consider offering some services to help maintain the facility.
It would be optimum if the courts at Erickson Park could be moved to a different part of the park due to the noise from Race Street. Everyone felt that the Skateboard Park supporters would probably disagree with that, as well as the residents of the apartments across from the tennis courts.
In addition, the courts at Shane Field should be kept, and properly maintained. It is a beautiful quiet facility, and the use of those courts should be encouraged.
Bill LaRue brought up the point that some sports, such as baseball and softball have declining activity, but those fields are constantly maintained and groomed.
As a united tennis community, we request the same attention.
Laurel presented some dollar figures regarding new courts, repair, resurfacing, and cost of lights. It would take about $30,000 to $50,000 per court for new courts, and about half that to resurface. Lights were figured at about $44,000. Lights at Erickson Field would have to have a turn off time due to the apartments. Anther consideration for the courts, if they are to be upgraded, is slope for drainage, and windscreens. We would like to have courts that are more readily usable in inclement weather.
It was acknowledged during the discussion of indoor tennis courts, that they are most likely not going to be considered a viable option for the City. Covering existing courts would probably also not be a potential. Laurel Cripe is working on a business plan for indoor courts to be owned and operated privately.
Rosemary brought up the fact that as a group, we are “not organized enough, and don’t have a ‘work force’”. The consensus was that is true, and the same people repetitively do what work now gets done.
In other areas, it was agreed the public needs to be more aware of what tennis, and our tennis players, does for the community. We would like to have some good representation at the Senior Games, Laurel is going to sign us up for the “Adopt a Highway” plan on a very visible mile of highway 101, Bill LaRue will work on getting a Teaching Pro over on a weekend for a special “Tennis Camp”, and Laurel will be working hard on the “Free Lesson Day” on March 19.
Marie Watford will send out new Membership Letters to all members requesting everyone to join the Club, with all the benefits and reasons to belong.
Lee Shames told the group that Green Crow and Merrill & Ring donated $250.00 each for our Saundra Kent Tournament held last August. We have sent them letters of appreciation.
Just a note- during the tournament, I went to the grocery store during the tournament, and Saundra’s mother and father saw my tennis garb, and said they appreciated what the Club has done. I told them that many tennis scholarships had been awarded in Saundra’s memory.
Respectfully submitted,
Marie Watford Secretary, Peninsula Tennis Club
