Board Meeting Nov 21, 2005 11/21/05 Board Meeting – PA Library, 5:30 PM Attending: Roger Goettling-Pres, Lee Shames-Treasurer, Laurel Cripe-Secretary, Rosemary Moorhead, Sandy Schultz, Becky Lupo, Rich Riski, Dave Shargel, Bill LaRue, Christy Brown. Treasury Report (Lee Shames)
$6720 Saving Lee reported that this is approximately $2000 more than was in the Treasury last year at this time. We currently have about 60 paid members, vs. 50 last year, paid about $1000 less in Scholarships this year, and brought in more money with the SK tournament in 2005 than 2004. Social co-chair nominations for 2006 - 07: We are still looking for nominations for social co-chairs to take office in May 2006. Norma Smith is willing to do it if she has help. We will ask at December meeting for volunteers for the social chair. 2006 tennis event schedule: Discussed the proposed event schedule for 2006:
January – PTC carpools to go watch the PAC-10 Indoor Championships
at UW Discussed adding more tennis-spectating related social events to the winter calendar. (E.g. gathering to watch Australian Open. Rosemary passed on Norma Smith’s suggestion that different people coordinate a social event each month. Publicity & Marketing promotions: We’re planning a promotional campaign for 2006, not tied to specific events. Bob Daugherty will get estimate for posters to put up in high traffic areas (Visitor Center, Library, etc), Bob Ritchie is getting estimates for banners to post on tennis courts w/ PTC phone and website, Laurel showed potential bumper sticker designs. (Cost Est. $90 / 100 stickers). Decided to announce a contest for bumper sticker design at December meeting. Community Tennis Development Workshop in Hollywood, CA in Feb. Laurel has been awarded a $500 scholarship from the USTA to attend the USTA National Community Tennis Development Workshop in Hollywood from Feb 3-5. Cost for 3 day registration is $379, Motel room (3 nights) $465, Flight Seattle – LAX $327. That is $671* over the amount of the scholarship. Laurel said she would cover cost of transport to Seatac from PA, and cost of any meals not included in workshop. Attendees voted (9 Yes, 0 No, 1 abstain) to recommend to the membership vote on Dec 3rd that PTC give Laurel $671 to attend conference, contingent upon her receiving the $500 from USTA. The PNW office of USTA also told Laurel that if she recommended someone else from PA/Sequim to attend the conference, they would give them $500 to attend, if they hadn’t given all the scholarship money out. Laurel said if another PTC member received the scholarship, she would split the club contribution to expenses with them. Erickson Park court refurbishment: Refreshed attendees memory on PTC proposal to City of PA that the 5 Erickson Park courts be rebuilt to 4 courts, lighted, meeting USTA construction guidelines. (Est cost $103,000 + tax). Currently the NRPA/USTA has a grant program that will match up to 20% of project cost, which we have made preliminary application for. There are grants of $5000 available from the USTA/PNW for court improvement. Laurel read the email Jerry Estberg sent to the tennis mailing list detailing his concerns with the Erickson Court proposal. There was discussion of the present problem with court availability during HS tennis season, people currently having to wait for lighted courts at the HS, and discussion of our increased programming bringing out more players and causing more court problems. Rich Riski stated that the college decided to field a golf team rather than tennis currently, but that there are no current plans to remove the college courts. We also discussed the noise level at Erickson Park, and the need for the court construction plan to contain some kind of noise abatement feature along Race Street. It was still felt that the high visibility position in the recreation centerpiece of the city outweighed the noise drawbacks, because it would increase tennis participation, and also make fundraising from non-tennis playing civic concerns easier. The courts would also be highly booked with city tennis programs and PTC scheduled events, so that if players just wanted to play a quiet game of doubles, they would probably prefer to play at the HS or college courts. The attendees also agreed on the need to continue supporting the PAHS tennis program, both through scholarships and help with court equipment. Roger Goettling stated that he felt that the need was still greater for covered courts than for any outdoor court improvement. Dave Shargel reported that the city will be installing all new restrooms in Erickson Park. He also stated that Bill Sterling, the interim Recreation Deputy Director in PA, is very much in favor of our court proposal, and that if the city can get grant money for the project, they’ll go for it. Laurel agreed with Lee Shames email comment that if PTC contributes money to the city, we need to verify that we receive priority for scheduling our events on those courts.
Correction: Email report from Jerry Estberg on house next to PAHS courts: To move forward, PTC needs to tell the city how much we can contribute in fund-raising. A discussion followed of the amount of new funds we thought we could raise in 2006 for Erickson Court refurbishment. (This is new funds, not relying on the existing PTC treasury.) Attendees agreed on recommending a pledge of $20,000 to the PTC membership vote on Dec 3rd. ------------------------------------------------ *Community Tennis Development in Hollywood, CA -- Feb 3 to 5.
