Peninsula Tennis Club

Newsletter: March 22, 2007

Hello all PTC members. The tennis season is shaping up, so lots of news.

Opportunities for play, first:

Entry deadline for the spring league is March 26th. It is World Team Tennis Format, with men’s & women’s singles & doubles, & mixed doubles play. Entry form and details are available on the PTC website at www.olypen.com/peninsulatennisclub/PlayTennis.htm. We could use some more “B” level teams, so if you want to enter, contact Christy Brown at 417-6724.

Also, PTC will be hosting a social, doubles mixer for the Jefferson County Community Tennis Assoc, on Saturday, April 7th, from 10:30 to 2pm at Port Angeles High School. Entry is free, but PTC participating players will provide potluck lunch after play. Please send an email to peninsulatennisclub@olypen.com if you want to sign up.

We will be picking up litter on our adopted section of Highway 101 on Saturday, April 21st, at 9am, followed by tennis play. Email us if you would like to participate.

Community Tennis: A group of players is meeting on Thursday evenings at 5:30 pm at PAHS for social doubles play. This is a loosely organized format and the courts are not reserved, but if you are looking for a place to find people to play with, this is a good place to start. Weather permitting, just show up and see who is out to play with.

The City of Port Angeles tennis programs will be starting April 30. A full class schedule is available at www.olypen.com/peninsulatennisclub/Lessons.htm. All classes are taught by Laurel Cripe (808-0924).

If any juniors are interested in playing USTA Jr. Team Tennis League of the Olympic Peninsula, please email peninsulatennisclub@olypen.com. We would like to get a team together from PA. Divisions are 10 & under, 12 & under, 14& under, 18 & under. Play begins June 26.

If you have children you are interested in getting started in tennis, Marceil Whitney will teach "Teenie Tennis - A Parent, Preschool and Elementary Teacher Coaching workshop" for building tennis skills with children ages 3-9 and having fun on the court, gym or in the yard. Free - Sunday April 29, 12-2 pm at Blue Heron gym in Port Townsend. Sign up at www.countyrec.com. Contact Julie Jablonski at (360) 385-5373 with questions.

You now have NO EXCUSE for not getting out on the court!

In tennis business:

Bob Ritchie has stepped forward to run the Saundra Kent Memorial Tournament in August. Bob was the SK director last year, and ran one of our most successful tournaments ever. The Saundra Kent tournament is the PTC’s biggest event, and being the Director is a significant time commitment. If you enjoy playing the SK, tell Bob “Thank You” when you see him! The PTC received an $800 technology grant from the USTA PNW to purchase a laptop for use in running tournaments and other club business, so hopefully that will make Bob’s job a little easier than last year.

The PTC holds business meetings the third Monday of every month at the Port Angeles Library at 6:30 pm. Anyone interested in getting involved with the PTC is welcome to attend. We will let you help out even if you are not a board member!

In Erickson Park news, the city is very close to putting the court reconstruction project out to bid. We are still on track for a June completion date. Check out the beautiful banner at the courts, donated by ASM Signs, which thanks our Grand Slam sponsors, Lakeside Industries and Olympic Electric. We still have two Grand Slam sponsorships available at the $2500 contribution level.

Attached to this email is a current PTC membership roster. Please let us know if you see errors on it. You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader, which you can download free off the internet, to view and print the .pdf file.

In a bit of off-the-wall tennis news: Doug Hastings has suffered a rare singles tennis loss to … Doug Hastings. Back in December, the Peninsula Tennis Club received an email from a Doug Hastings of Boston, who had found the Doug Hastings of Sequim on the USTA league rating site, and tracked him down to PTC. Email challenges were exchanged, and then eventually, Doug A. Hastings of Boston showed up to play Doug A. Hastings of Sequim. The Doug Hastings World Championship match went to ….Doug A. Hastings! The score was 6-0, 6-4 in a highly entertaining match at Sunland, featuring spectators, media, trash-talk signage, ball girls, several between-the-leg shots, and a pre-engraved trophy cake. The match got some pre-event national press at sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/writers/jon_wertheim/02/27/mailbag/2.html and may receive some more national press, which we will leave the reporting of all the trivial details to.

As the tennis season unfolds, you can always find the latest tennis news on our website at www.olypen.com/peninsulatennisclub. Check it periodically, so you don’t miss anything…

See you on the courts!
