Business Meeting March 20, 2006
Fran Burch told us who the top four students were that applied for A Tennis Club scholarship. !. Tyler Clifford 2. Christopher Lemon 3 .Louise Guatney 4. Emily Columbia. Fran explained the various categories that were used to score all of the applications. It was motioned seconded and approved that we give each of the top four a $500 scholarship from the club. (UPDATE: Fran found that neither Sequim candidate is playing tennis this spring, and no other Sequim candidate was in top choices. Scholarship winners are Tyler Clifford, Christopher Lemon & Brooke Helpenstell, all from PAHS. )
A discussion followed on the proposed values, mission and vision statements. It was suggested that civic minded might sound better as community minded and professional to well-run.
There has been a lot of positive publicity in the Port Angeles and Sequim papers lately about tennis activities, events, and fund raising projects. The local sports reporter attended one of Laurels tennis training sessions and wrote a very glowing report in the Port Angeles paper.
The new club brochure was looked at and a discussion followed as to what format would be most attractive and cost effective. Bob will look into the possible donation of the brochures by a local business. (Update: UPS Store donated B&W printing, we pay cost of colored paper.)
Laurel gave us an update on the Erickson Park tennis court rehab project. The contractor who looked at the courts has suggested covering the existing courts with crushed rock and then repaving over the top to get the desired slope. This method would cost $180,000 with $32,000 for lights and $24,000 for fence work. (The $24 K fencing is included in the $180K. The lights are in addition to the $180 K.) The proposal now goes to the Capitol Project Review Commission before being forwarded to the City Council in July.
Bob gave us an update on Randy Johnson’s proposed covered courts at the same location. He agreed that we should continue on with our rehab project with the possibility of including some of the basic infrastructure that would be needed to put up covered courts in the future. There was also discussion on the cost of covered courts with Randy and associates willing to put in $150,000 with the expectation that we would raise the rest of the expected half a million cost.
Additional suggestions
The tennis fest was discussed. Laurel got several volunteers from meeting attendees to assist with activities on the day of the fest.
Bob demonstrated the HAL tennis ball hitting machine and insisted that we all try it before leaving.
Sequim donated wind screens to the club which we will put on the Erickson court fence to improve visibility towards the park.
Laurel informed us that it is now possible to have a member’s only section on the club web site and will set it up accordingly.
