LINK OF THE WEEK ARCHIVE

2007:

June 23 - July 17: First person to email me why this is link of the week wins a new can of tennis balls.

March 21 - June 23: Peter Bodo's Tennis World, as featured in Tennis Magazine. Very interesting & entertaining tennis news site.
Links of the week needed - if you find a good link, email us!

Feb 21 - March 21: An anonymous blog you will be surprised at.  (Check Feb 20 entry...).  Anyone who can guess the author's identity wins a new can of balls.

Dec 13 - Feb 20: CourtCoverage.com.  This is a great new tennis site, you can help it improve.  They are collecting reviews for tennis courts all over the country.  This will be a great resource for traveling players.  Help them out by writing  reviews of places you have played.  Email them if the places aren't listed.  I have emailed to have Port Angeles added.

2006:

Nov 1 - Dec 12: USTA PNW 2006 awards recipients.  Look for familiar names....

Oct 20-Oct 31: Photo of the week.  What else ?? USTA TENNIS FEST Oct 20 - Oct22 in Seattle.

June 21 - Oct 19: Photo of the week.  Olympia Bally's Women's 4.0 USTA team, which won SW Washington division playoffs and is  going to sectionals in Portland in August. A win in August sends them to Nationals in Hawaii.  You may recognize some players...

April 5 - June 20:  It's tournament season again.  Get out and play a tournament!  There are many USTA age-group tournaments in the region,  and Seattle area club tournaments. Get out and play the outdoor tournaments, where we have an advantage over the spoiled, indoor players.

Feb 24 - April 4: What else, but The Tennis Channel?  Now available in our area via DISH Network's Top 180 programming package.  On free preview on channel 280 through April 4th.  You can see tournaments here, actual DOUBLES coverage, tennis instruction...  24 hours a day!  This link goes to their instructional page.  Check out the one-handed backhand video.  (Archived link of the week available on web links page.)

Feb 1 - Feb 23: Here's a link to a whole site on playing doubles.  Operation doubles has strategy, pieces on picking partners, etc.

Jan 12 - Jan 31: Too much rain to play?  Here's a tennis game for you....

Dec 29 - Jan 11:

This week's link is more fun from Tennis4you - Tennis Quotes.   To err is human, to put the blame on someone else is doubles! (Anon)

2005:

Dec 9 - Dec 28:
This week's link is fun - Tennis Quizzes from Tennis4you.  Let's all pass the rules quizzes!

Nov 24 - Dec8: This "week's" link is to the USTA's National Community Tennis Development Workshop in Hollywood California in February.  The Pacific NW section of the USTA has awarded Laurel Cripe a national $500 scholarship to attend.

Oct 26 - Nov 23: This "week's" link is an instructional website:  http://www.maxtennis.com.  I discovered this website when I played mixed-doubles this weekend at the Bellingham Octoberfest tournament with the site's owner/instructor, David Ranney.  The website focuses on the mental aspect of tennis.

Sept 21 - Oct 25th: In honor of Gail Benzler of the USTA's visit to PA, the link of the week is to the web page for the USTA Pacific Northwest section.

If you aren't familiar with the USTA, check out their website.   The USTA provides tournament and league play, supports community tennis development (that's us!), supports coach training, and is the center for all things tennis in the US.  Most of their services are available to non-USTA members, but a $35 (adult) annual membership in the USTA also gets you a subscription to Tennis magazine and Tennis Times, a PNW tennis publication.

August 19 - Sept 21: Did you enjoy the Saundra Kent Tournament?  Get out of town and play more tournaments,! This is the schedule from the USTA website for the Pacific Northwest.   Lots of tournaments in Portland and Seattle area this fall.  You can sign up over the web.  Note that in any tournament, the director may choose to combine or cancel events that have too few entries to run.  If they cancel, they will refund your entry fee.  Note that September 23-25th is the Oktoberfest tournament in Bremerton.

Also, from the Seattle area local
schedule, October 14th to 16th is the Mill Creek Tournament run by Jesse Schouten, and October 21 - 23 is the Bellingham Octoberfest.

Here's how to interpert the USTA event listings: (NOTE: UPDATED 8/24, I HAD SEVERAL  MISTAKES EARLIER)

For example in the Amy Yee Open in September: "MW(Op)sd; X(Op)d; Senior: MW(35-75)s; MW(35,45-75)d; X(35,45,55)d" means there are events for Men & Women Open in singles and doubles, Mixed Open doubles, Men & Women's 35,40, 45, 50,55,60,65,70& 75 singles, Men's & Women's 35, 45, 50,55, 60, 65, 70, & 75 doubles, and Mixed 35, 45, & 55 doubles.

For sanctioned (age group) events, you must be a current USTA member.  You can join USTA online ($35 annual membership includes a subscription to Tennis magazine - good deal!)  The age groups are for players that age and over.  You can play in a "younger" category than you are, if you wish (e.g. If you are 45, you can play the 35s, 40s, or 45s, but not the 50s).  Also, you can play an age event for the entire year you turn that age.  For example, if you will turn 45 on Dec 31, 2005, you can play the 45s in an event in January (or any month) of 2005.

At the Bremerton Oktoberfest tournament in October, "NM(3.5-4.5)s,SE; NW(3.0-4.5)s,SE; NX(3.5-4.5)d,SE; CM(7.0,8.0)d,SE; CW(6.0,7.0,8.0)d,SE"  means there are  NTRP Men's single events 3.5, 4.0, 4.5; NTRP Women's single events 3.0, 3.5, 4.0, & 4.5;  NTRP Mixed doubles 3.5, 4.0, & 4.5; Combined-rating 7.0 & 8.0 men's doubles; and Combined-rating 6.0, 7.0, & 8.0 Women's doubles.  I think SE after each event means they are all single-elimination,  in other-words no consolation matches after first-round losses.  If you have any questions on the tournament information, you should email or phone the listed tournament director to verify details.

August 9th - August 18th:    Here's a player profile from the USTA that does a great job of explaining why tennis is important. Jobs and family are important, but so are passions!   Lots of good stuff in this article!

July 13 - August 8:   TennisLovers.com is  another good Free lesson site, with lots of short tips on strategy. These lessons are great for "B" level players, or players wanting to get to the "B" level.   (Start by checking out the lesson on "Advancing to the net after a lob".)

June 28 - July 12: The link this week is a surprise.  Just to see if anyone is paying attention....

May 18 - June 27:  Here is a link to the best instructional tennis web site I've seen!  TennisOne is a phenomenal site loaded with video clips so you can analyze the pros' strokes, and with lessons on strokes and strategy.  The site costs $50/year, but you can check it out with a 30-day free trial membership.  (Make sure you do the free trial during a month you really have time to use the site!) The email newsletter is worth signing up for, and is free.  The site may have too much information for beginning players, but it is a great site for advanced players!

March 25 - May 18: The link this week is to a story on the USTA website: "Tennis ranked one of the Top Five Calorie Burning Exercises" from March 9, 2005.  With all the attention to the health and weight problems of the public in the US, we can all promote tennis as a fitness regime.

Feb 3 - March 24:   Just found a new general tennis web site, Tennis 4 All.  This site has classified ads for tennis equipment, tennis reference articles, and hopefully soon a link to the PTC website.

Dec 20 - Feb 2: Finally a new link of the week!  This week's link is to an interesting article on the WTA tour site on five steps to improve your game.

2004:

Oct 13 - Dec 19: This week's link is to The Tennis Channel website.  Specifically, to the page to submit a request for your TV provider to carry The Tennis Channel.  Currently the only option available on the Peninsula to get this channel is Voom Satellite.  Please submit a petition (early & often) to your cable/satellite provider to carry The Tennis Channel.  These providers look only at numbers when determining programming.

Sept 30-Oct 12: This "week's" link is to a column called Mental Equipment by John F. Murray.  This was a series of articles on the mental side of tennis which are archived on the Tennis Server website.  The columns appear to be discontinued, but there are several years of archived columns available on this page.  Check out the rest of the Tennis Server site as well, a lot of good stuff here.

Sept 6 - Sept 29: What else but the US Open?  If you aren't watching it on TV, you're missing out!!

Aug 23 - Sept 5: Looking for a new racket?  How do you choose which racket is right for you?  This racket selection page from Tennis Warehouse does a great job explaining how different features affect how rackets play. Tennis Warehouse is also an all-around great tennis retailing site, and has a racket demo program.  You can try out rackets for a week for the price of postage (2 rackets are about $20).

Aug 16 - 22:  For all those inspired by the Saundra Kent Tournament, this week's link is to the online tennis lessons from the USTA.  These are pretty cool video lessons (at least with a high-speed internet connection they were pretty cool.) Ten lessons for $10.95, and 2 weeks to view them.

Aug 8 - 15:  This week, in honor of the Saundra Kent tournament, the link is to the Code of Tennis - the rules for unofficiated matches (i.e.  almost every match most players will ever play.)  Know the rules & The Code !!
