October, 2006 Dear Tennis Supporter: As you may be aware, the Peninsula Tennis Club has committed to provide funds to the City of Port Angeles to help finance the rebuilding of the Erickson Park tennis courts in spring of 2007. The project is estimated to cost $157,000, with $100,000 being provided by the City of Port Angeles in the 2007 budget, $36,400 secured in USTA grants, and the remaining $20,600 coming from PTC. We have currently raised about $12,500 in donations for the courts, and continue to raise funds. Our entire obligation will be turned over to the City of Port Angeles by December 31, 2006. Any shortfall in donations will be covered with funds from the Peninsula Tennis Club treasury. The courts at Erickson Park are in an advanced state of disrepair, with extensive cracking, puddles, an exposed ledge, and inadequate space between courts. The rebuilding process will correct the grade of the courts so they slope & drain properly, extend the length of the courts to meet USTA standards, and space four new courts in banks of two to USTA standards. The new complex will contain space on the east end next to Race Street for spectator bleachers, moving the courts away from traffic noise, and will have adequate space around the courts for court benches and storage for PTC equipment. The initial stage of the project does not include funds for lighting, however we will lay conduit for lighting, and will continue to raise funds to install lighting as soon as possible. In our agreement with the city, Peninsula Tennis Club will be given second priority, after the City of Port Angeles, Recreation Department, to schedule tennis activities at the Erickson Park courts at no charge, will be allowed to install court amenities (benches & windscreens), and will be given access to the courts & utilities to regularly clean the courts. In early 2005, the Peninsula Tennis Club identified rebuilding the Erickson Park courts as our highest priority. In addition to providing much-needed court space to increase our tennis programming, we believe that the central location of the Erickson Park courts will greatly increase the visibility of tennis and the Peninsula Tennis Club in our community and will bring out many new players. In addition, the rebuilt courts will revitalize an underused area of our busiest park. The Pacific Northwest section of the USTA (United States Tennis Association) recognized the Peninsula Tennis Club for the Erickson Court Project with the 2006 President’s Award for “excellence in promoting the game” of tennis. To be part of this award-winning project, please return the enclosed page with your tax-deductible donation. Thank you! Laurel Cripe, President
