Masks of the indigenous peoples of the Northwest
Coast of America are among the most dramatic artistic
creations of any tribal society. Everything in traditional
Northwest culture fits into an explicit context and
place. Masks were carved for three specific occasions:
the first was for presentation of high ranking chiefs
and ancestors; the second was for the performances of
dances re-enacting myths and legends; the third was
for shamanism and healing.
