ABOUT US

The Center was the brain child of the late Arthur D. Feiro for whom the facility is named.  Art Feiro was a highly respected educator at the Port Angeles school district and later at Peninsula College, and the Center fulfills his vision for a "marine lab" on the Port Angeles waterfront.  After more than a decade of planning, fund raising, and a lot of hard work by the community (aided by the construction of the City pier in 1980), the Marine Life Center opened its doors in the fall of 1981.

Funding for the Center was raised from the State Legislature, and from local corporations, service organizations and groups, and from personal donations.  Much of the actual labor was donated by area contractors and individuals.

The mission statement of the Center emphasizes its multi-role purpose, as a:

As previously noted the Feiro Marine Life Center is a partnership between Peninsula College and the City of Port Angeles.  The City holds the title to the building.   The Center is operated by the College under an agreement with the City.  Financial support for operations is provided by the College, the Port Angeles Parks and Recreation Department, and by contributions from visitors and the interested public.

During the academic year, the Feiro Marine Life Center is host to classes from Peninsula College and the City of Port Angeles School District. The Center also provides a learning experience for other area schools.
