In addition to programs exclusively through the FMLC, our naturalists and educators have collaborated with several local organizations to enrich the student’s learning experience.  In partnership with the Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary’s Discovery Center, students learn their influence on the ocean and the ocean’s influence on them through hands-on, experiential learning opportunities.  The Ocean Literacy program, prepared by NOAA,

The Feiro Marine Life Center (FMLC) educational department in Port Angeles offers the Marine Ecosystem Explorations (M.E.E) program for schools and local groups to learn about Washington’s amazing coastal and marine ecosystems.  Through the M.E.E. program, students will learn how ocean life depends on one another for food, their habitat adaptations, the ocean’s features (tides, interconnected systems, water

cycle, diversity, etc.), and the student’s own personal influence on the ocean.  Our naturalists cater the program to the participant’s age and educational background providing a full range of opportunities.

For younger students, naturalists of the FMLC introduce the “Let’s Do Lunch” program - An investigation into the amazing plants and animals living in the ocean, what they eat, and the unique adaptations and strange body structures some of these plants and animals developed in their quest for food.  For older students, naturalists teach the program “Taking a Closer Look” – A lesson on the adaptations of marine vertebrates and invertebrates to their specific habitat or niche.

National Geographic and a number of other agencies has prepared a detailed program for ocean education which addresses those areas in state and national science education standards where there is a lack of ocean-related content.  These concepts are the structure for the educational sessions.  More information on the Ocean Literacy program and The Essential Principles of Ocean Sciences K-12 can be found at www.coexploration.org/oceanliteracy

Other excellent learning opportunities included in our M.E.E program are the Fish on the Fence (FOTF) program and Killer Whale Tales.  The FOTF program allows students with the help of Rosalynn Rees, of Aglazing Art Studio, to glaze their
