In the Duxbury section of the 1643 PlymouthColony list of men able to bear arms [PCR 8:190]. (The son of theimmigrant was probably the John Washburn who was one of six men fromDuxbury sent forth as soldiers in the "late expedition against theNarrohiggansets and their confederates," 28 October 1645 [PCR 2:90].)ESTATE: Assessed 9s. in Plymouth tax list of 25 March 1633 [PCR 1:10]. On5 January 1635/6 John Washborne purchased from Edward Bompass a house andpalisado, and the court confirmed the purchase [PCR 1:33]. On 14 March1635/6 John Washburne had rights for one cow on Mr. Capt. Standish's hayground [PCR 1:40]. Standish and Washburne had the same arrangement on 20March 1636/7 [PCR 1:56]. On 6 April 1640 William Sherman and "JohnWashborne" were "to have such accommodations of land as may be spared inthe place where they desire" [PCR 1:145]. On 5 April 1641 it was orderedthat John Washbourne might have forty acres in Duxborrow "if it be thereto be had" [PCR 2:12]. On 4 March 1647[/8] Morris Truant of Duxbury andhis wife Jane sold to "John Washburne" of Duxbury twenty acres ofplanting land, eight acres of planting land and two parcels of meadow[PCR 12:153-54]. CHILDREN: i JOHN, bp. Bengeworth 26November 1620 [Washbourne Gen 48]; m. Plymouth 6 December 1645 ElizabethMitchell [PCR 2:94], daughter of EXPERIENCE MITCHELL. ii PHILIP, bp.Bengeworth 2 June 1622 [Washbourne Gen 48, 49]; bur. there 7 June 1622[Washbourne Gen 48]. iii PHILIP, b. about 1624 (aged eleven in 1635[Hotten 57]); m. by about 1664 Elizabeth Irish, daughter of JOHN IRISH.COMMENTS: "Margerie Washborn," aged 49, and her two sons, "Jo[hn]Washborne," aged 14, and "Phillipp Washborne," aged 11, were passengerson the Elizabeth & Ann to New England in 1635 [Hotten 57]. Washburn wastaxed in 1633 but not in 1634, and then in March of 1635 he purchasedsome land, and soon after his wife and children arrived in New England. This sequence of events suggests that John Washburn returned to Englandlate in 1633 to arrange for the passage of his family, and that hereturned late in 1634, some months before the rest of his family sailedin the spring of 1635. On 2 January 1632/3 John Washburne failed to winhis suit against Edward Dowty over a stolen pig [PCR 1:6]. On 4 June 1638John Washburne acknowledged that he owed the King Ð40 [PCR 1:85]. On 3May 1642 three indifferent men were selected to set the ancient boundsright between Mr. Thomas Beesbeach and John Washbourne [PCR 2:39, 52].BIBLIOGRAPHIC NOTE: In 1907 James Davenport published a study of aWashbourne family in England, and included a section on the immigrant toNew England [The Washbourne Family of Little Washbourne and Wichenford inthe County of Worcester (London 1907), cited above as Washbourne Gen, pp.35-58]. In 1913 and 1914 George E. Bowman published a series of "WashburnNotes," the third installment having direct relevance to the immigrant[MD 15:247-53, 16:47-53, 248-53]. Stratton's treatment of John Washburnand his two sons is especially useful [Stratton 368-70].

5121. Margaret "Margery" MOORE

Margery MOORE was christened about 1588. SheIMMIGRATED ABT 1637 TODUXBURY. A correction regarding Margery MOORE. She was baptized on 3Nov. 1588 in St. Peter's Parish, Bengeworth, Worcestershire, but she wasborn about 1586, according to her age (49) when she sailed to New Englandaboard the "Elizabeth and Ann" in 1635.

5122. Experience MITCHELL

Came to Plymoth on the third ship, Ann in 1623 (see below). Experiencemarried Jane Cooke, dau. of Pilgrim Francis Cooke and Hester Mahieu.Jane's death has never exactly been determined, and for many years allchildren were considered to be those by Jane and Experience. Ensuingresearch has confounded the earlier lineage, and currently only Elizabethand Thomas and possibly Mary (MF5G, Ralph V. Wood, 1996, Picton Press,12:29+) are thought to be Jane's. Experience married, possibly about1640, Mary ______, whose surname has never been determined. The will ofExperience Mitchell was first printed in Mayflower Descendant Volume1902, April, and was transcribed from a copy of the original. Bowman in1934 discovered the original and added to his earlier comments. The dateof the will had been recorded as 5, December 1689, which Bowmanquestioned as being seven months after the recording of his inventory, nor could inventory be taken until the death of the testator, and thusthe making of the will as being in December, 1689 was likely in error. His comments follow: "Judge Nahum Mitchell, in his History ofBridgewater, published in 1840, stated that Experience Mitchell's willwas "dated 1684"; it is probable, therefore, that he had seen theoriginal document; but my attempts to locate it met with no success untilI was informed by Mr. Merritt G. Perkins, former Treasurer General of theGeneral Society of Mayflower Descendants, that the will had been found byMiss Clara W. Crane of Bridgewater, among her father's papers, and hadbeen deposited with the Old Bridgewater Historical Society, at WestBridgewater, Mass. Through the courtesy of Miss Crane and of Miss HelenE Bartlett, the secretary of the Historical Society, the will . ..clearly shows that the date was 5 December, "1684", not "1689" asrecorded by the clerk of the court at Plymouth. Experience Mitchell, therefore, died after 5 December, 1684, the date of his will, and before14 May, 1689, the date of the inventory of his estate. The will wasprobated on 4 September, 1689, and the clerk made the usual endorsementto that effect on the original document, and correctly recorded thisdate. The will is about twelve and one-fourth by eight and one-fourthinches. For nearly two hundred and fifty years it has been kept folded toa size three by eight and one-fourth inches, and while so folded a smallpart of five thicknesses of paper on one corner was gnawed away, apparently by mice. The seal, which is in unusually good condition, shows a heart pierced vertically by an arrow, with the letter E at theleft and M at the right, and four crosses, one each above and below theseletters, the whole surrounded by a circle."
