1568. Benjamin COE the Immigrant
Maybe 16 Oct
Benjamin may have been born on Oct 16 and christened on Oct 18, 1628.George Coe, born December 20, 1843, in Little Compton, RI, was the fifthchild of Joseph and Julia Ann (Taylor) Coe of Little Compton. Hissiblings were Dr. Henry Francis Coe, born July 27, 1835; Harriet Coe,born Oct. 3, 1836; Oliver Bartlett Coe, born Jan. 24, 1839; Ezra Coe,born Nov. 27, 1841; Charles Coe, born Sept. 30, 1846; and Julia Ann Coe,b. March 21, 1848. George's father, Joseph Coe, who was born Jan. 14,1813, in Little Compton, was a son of Ezra and Sarah (Bailey)Coe. He diedin Boston, MA, June 3, 1886. The Coe family was first taken to LittleCompton by Ezra Coe's great grandfather John Coe about the time the townwas settled. John Coe, who was born June 30, 1649, at Gloucester, MA, anddied Dec. 16, 1728, at Little Compton, was the oldest son of Matthew andElizabeth (Wakley)Coe of Portsmouth, NH; Casco, ME, and Gloucester,Salem, and Falmouth, MA. Matthew Coe, who first appeared in this countryin 1640 in Portsmouth, NH, had a grandson Samuel who was born December12, 1692, at Little Compton, RI. This Samuel Coe married April 8, 1716,at Little Compton, Mary Chadwick. They were the parents of sevenchildren, among whom was a son Samuel. This Samuel Coe was born January1, 1720, also at Little Compton, and married there July 21, 1746,Elizabeth Peckham. He died about 1747, without children. On June 4, 1748,Elizabeth (Peckham) Coe married at Little Compton, Aaron Grinnell. Theywere the parents of three children: Noah Grinnell, born 1752; SamuelGrinnell, born 1754; and Obed Grinnell, born 1756. Elizabeth (Peckham)Coe Grinnell died about the year 1757. Her father Joseph Peckham, in hiswill, left eight shillings to his three grandchildren, "children of mydaughter Elizabeth Greenhill." Aaron Grinnell remarried December 31,1758, Margaret Taylor (see Dr. Henry F. Coe, "Descendants of Matthew Coe(Boston: Rockwell & Churchill, 1894), p. 9). It is of interest thatSamuel Coe of Little Compton, RI, was the great grandson of ElizabethAlden, daughter of John Alden and Priscilla Mullins of Mayflower fame andheroine of Longfellow's "The Courtship of Miles Standish." ElizabethAlden was the first white child born in New England. A large granitemonument stands in her honor at Little Compton, the north side of whichis inscribed with these words: "Elizabeth Pabodie, daughter of thePlymouth Pilgrims, John Alden and Priscilla Mullins. The first whitewoman born in New England." John Coe was a surveyor and settler ofboundaries for the Plymouth Colony, of which Little Compton was a partuntil 1747. As such, he came down the Seaconnet River to Little Comptonabout the time the town was settled. On arriving there he went to thehome of William Pabodie, where he remained "until his work was done."Pabodie had married Elizabeth Alden. In their home he became acquaintedwith their daughter Sarah, whom he later married. He bought a large tractof land in the settlement, which remained in the Coe family until 1852.Their oldest son was Samuel mentioned above. Further mention of MatthewCoe should be made here. Matthew's history has been fairly treated inboth Dr. Henry F. Coe's "Descendants of Matthew Coe" and J. GardnerBartlett's "Robert Coe, Puritan." Both summed up their research by sayingthat Matthew Coe's origins had not been discovered. The author is notclaiming here to have discovered his nativity, but in researchingmaterial for "The Coe Families of Maryland and Virginia" the followinginformation was discovered: "Richard Coy was a servant of Mr. Whittinghamwho brought him over from Boston, Lincolnshire, England, in 1638, also ofMr. Hubbard in Ipswich, as early as 1645 for terms of years. He lived inWenham [MA] 1655-62 where he was believed to keep an ordinary and drawwine and strong waters. His sister Mary was in Boston in 1654. Hisbrother Matthew's name was often written COE" (David W. Hoyt, "The OldFamilies of Salisbury and Amesburg, Mass." (1897), pp. 118, 699, 817). Abarber and fisherman, this Matthew Coe (Coy) was killed by IndiansSeptember 9, 1675. His brother Richard was killed by Indians August 2,1675, at Brookfield, MA. I hope this is helpful. 1810. Joshua HOWARD
According to Hanson, George A. Old Kent: the Eastern Shore of Maryland.John P. Des Forges, Baltimore 1876, p. 40: "Joshua Howard, . . . camefrom England to this country about the year 1667. He was from Manchester, where the people generally turned out, and he with them, at the time ofMonmouth's invasion, though very young, to support James. They marched toLondon, where, Monmouth being defeated, they were discharged; and hepreferred coming to this country rather than return to his father, whowas displeased at his leaving home in the manner he did. He obtained agrant for the land where he settled, which is still in the family, soonafter he came to this country. He married Joanna O'Carroll, from Ireland, and had a number of children, one of whom, Cornelius, father of J. E.Howard, married Ruth Eager, whose grandfather, George Eager, as appearsby the records, purchased, in 1668, the estate now held, near, andincluding part of the City of Baltimore." [ p 27] JOSHUA HOWARD m.Joanna O'Carroll and had child., viz., Francis Howard,--CorneliusHoward,--Violetta Howard,--Sarah Howard,--Mary Howard, who m. "The Howards of Baltimore,Maryland, in the United States of America trace their descent veryclearly from Joshua Howard(*), who in 1699, was granted a large tract ofland in Baltimore County; and there formerly was in their possession anArmorial Shield painted on copper and inscribed "Howard Earl of Arundel."A reproduction of this shield is on the tomb of Corneluis Howard, a sonof Joshua; it is, however, a modification of the Howard Shield differingin many respects. Etc." -- "The Howard Lineage" by Gustine, CoursonWeaver - page 34. "Joshua Howard, came to America in 1667, fromManchester, England, settled in Baltimore County and married Miss JoannaO'Carroll, whose father emigrated from Ireland."--Emory, Mary Bourke.Colonial Families and Their Descendants. Press of the Sun PrintingOffice. Baltimore. 1900, p. 159. "The "Howards of Md.", viz., theMatthew and Joshua Howard families and the Howards of Charles Co., derivealike from titled English Howards. According to Burke, the EnglishHowards are of Saxon origin. "Recent inquiries," he states, has enabledhim to "establish the pedigree by undoubted evidence" ("Peerage andBaronetage," 1913). "Howard or Hereward," a kinsman of Duke Oslac, livingin the reign of King Edgar (957 to 973)--two generations before theNorman Conquest--was the earliest known English ancestor. Of the 8thgeneration from "Hereward" was Sir Wm. Howard. He was Chief Justice ofthe Common Pleas from 1297 to 1308. He was the Son of "Jn. Howard ofWigenhall," Norfolk, and was the "Original," or, as Burke puts it, "theimmediate founder of the noble house of Howard." Six generations later,in direct line from Sir Wm., [p 145] the Ducal branch emerged(6.28.1483), when Sir Jn. Howard was created Earl Marshall of Eng. andthe 1st Howard Duke of Norfolk. The arms of Sir Wm. Howard, Chf. Jus.,were: "Gu, a bend between six cross crosslets fitchee, ar."--the originalundifferenced Howard coat of arms,--and this "six cross crosslets" hasremained the common characteristic feature in the arms of all thesubsequent noble branches of English Howards, including the Ducal branch, that, "next to the Blood Royal, stands at the head of the peerage ofEng." (Very worthy tributes to this renowned English fam. may be found inthe B. Sun, 1.17.1904, by Mrs. Richardson, author of "Side Lights," andby Miss E. E. Lantz, in the Sun of 5.28.1905. See also "Notable SouthernFamilies," vol. 1, Howard, by Mrs. Armstrong). The armorial featureabove noted, which identifies the English titled Howards of variousnames, as of kindred stock, is identical with that of the Md. Howards. The stone erected over the grave of Cornelius Howard (of Joshua), who d.in 1777, and was buried on the family est. near Baltimore, Md., bore, asit does today, the arms: "Gu, a bend argent between six cross-crossletsfitchee"; and as far back as 1695, Jn. Howard, Sen. (son of Matthew3),stamped on the waxen seal of his will, still preserved at Annapolis, thearms of his house, that came from his English forbears: "Gu, a bendbetween six crosses crosslets fitchee, ar." (Statement of Mr. Francis B.Culver, well-known genealogist of Washington, D. C., Registrar General ofthe National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution andgenealogical editor of the magazine of the Society, "The Minute Man." Inthe Wm. and Mary College Quarterly, vol. 26, p. 125, Oct. 1917, Mr.Culver tells of his personal examination of the original will of Jn.Howard, Sen., at Annapolis, dated 12.30.1695, proved 5.17.1696, and hisdiscovery of the arms of its seal, described as above). Coats of arms onancient tombstones, seals and wills, are usually regarded asauthoritative in heraldry. In the present case they undoubtedly prove theexistence of kinship between the Md. Howards and the armorial Englishhouses--a kinship supported by much tradition, although the exactconnection is unknown and may not, indeed, be susceptible of proof. Basedon this "rule" of Heraldry, the one certain thing that can be said ofboth the Matthew Howard and the Joshua Howard families of Md. is thatthey are of the same "Original Stock" from which "the renowned family ofthe Howards" of England "did derive their Originall." (See Dugdale, 1666,as quoted by "C. C. C." in B. Sun, 3.19.1905). --Welsh, Luther W.Genealogy of the Welsh and Hyatt Families. Lambert Moon Printing Company.Missouri. 1928, pp. 144-45.
