32. Niklaus JUNKER

Christened 28 March, 1830 Anna KOENIG Sex: F Marriage(s): Spouse:Niklaus JUNKER Marriage: 28 Aug 1852 Bern, Bern, Switzerland TheLAWRENCE & THOMPSON'S Grundy County Directory for 1877-78 lists aNicholas Younker living in Felix Township at the Northeast Quarter ofSection 23. This is precisely 2 and 1/2 miles north of Cole City on theeastern edge of the short Pioneer Cemetery and Prairie nature Preserve. It is apparently this same Nicholas Younker who dies in April of 1888according to the Morris Herald. This notice states that Nicholas Younkerlived in the "town of Felix, 2 1/2 miles north of Coal City." This is thesame location as the Nicholas Younker mentioned in the 1877-78 CountyDirectory. We are not sure if he is the husband of Ann or the husband ofJoanna Bordlaw. (another possiblity is that Anna died and Nicholasremarried Joanna, although this leaves the mystery of the diposition ofNicholas and Anna 4 boys). At any rate, there is a string of four noticesin the Morris Herald, beginning with April 27 edition, 1888, announcingthe auction of the material remains of the late Nicholas Younker, in thetown of Felix. The remains that went on sale in Felix on May 7, 1888included: two horses, one colt, sixteen milk cows, one 3-year old steer, sever 2-year olds, seven 1-year olds, three hogs, 2 wagons, one singleseat buggy, one sleigh, one scraper, one cultivator, one eight-toothcultivator, one three-horse drag, 1 plow, 1 Walter A. Wood's mower, 1 hayrake, 1 set of harness, forty chickens, household furniture and oldtrumpery generally. John Peart was the administrator and John Thorson, the auctioneer. Announcement of Probate also occured in the same paper:Estate of Nicholas Younker; John Peart, executor, proof of death filed;widow's relenquishment and bond fild and approved. Ffirst Monday in Juneset as claim day; appraiser, Lemuel short, F. Wilenow, C. Peart.Petition for sale of personal property filed. It is interesting thatmembers of the Peart family are buried both at the Short Pioneer Cemeterynear Younker's property and at the Braceville cemetery south of CoalCity. 48. John HATHAWAY

John Hathaway, son of Abraham the Patriot, was born about 1785, probablyin Washington County, Pa. John probably came to Miami County Ohio withhis father about 1799 when he was about 14 years old. It was in MiamiCounty that he later met and married his wife Esther Coe, the daughter ofJoesph Coe and Mary Gibbons Coe. The Coe were descended from animportant New England family as well. The wedding took place the daybefore Christmas, Dec 24, 1805 in Montgomery County, Ohio. John was 20and Esther was 21 years old. They settled at Urbana Ohio initially.John was taxed for 256 acres in 1810 and taxed again in 1812. During theWar of 1812 John Hathaway served as a teamster with the Ohio Militia, three regiments of which were called into Federal service and assigned toBrig Gen Hull commander of the North Western Army (and governor ofMichigan). The Ohio units were to help defend Detroit. Its probablethat John served under Capt Henry Brush who was in charge of the OhioMilitia supply train trying to get through to Gen. Hull in Detroit. Dueto Indian and British attacks against three separate forces send by Hullto povide an armed escort for Brush's train, this mission failed. Moreover, the British were able to force Gen Hull into surrendering atDetroit. Hull's surrender technically included Capt Brush's men who werewaiting for the Hull's escort at the Raisin. However, the Ohio menrefused to surrender and instead retreated back into Ohio with theirsupplies. John served for 6 weeks before returning home ill--someoneelse had to drive his team back to Ohio. It is not sure during whichperiod John served--the War started June 18 and Hull surrendered on Aug16. Since John served only six weeks until he returned home ill, heprobably had returned home a couple of weeks before Hull's surrender.Whatever the case, John reenlisted in the Ohio Militia on 4 Sept. 1813in response to Gen William Henry Harrison's call for troops to repulsethe British invation into northern Ohio in the earlier part of 1813.John's enrollment occured just 6 days before Commodore Oliver Perry'sfamous "Don't Give Up the Ship" victory against the British fleet on LakeErie. Perry's victory opened the road for Harrison's army to recaptureDetroit and to defeat the British army in Canada at the Thames River onOct 4. 1813. During this campaign, John Hathaway served under CaptWilliam B Fordyce in Company H of the Ohio 1st regiment. After Detroithad been retaken, Harrison's army marched to Niagra. They saw no moremajor military action, however. When his six month enlistment was up inMarch, and the threat to Ohio eleminated, John returned home. John serveda total of 6 months and 2 days. He received his payroll on March 25,1814. The War continued a few months more until the British fleet wasdestroyed by the American Commodore Thomas Macdonough on Lake Champlain 3and 5 Sept 1814. The British decided to sign a treaty to bring the Wardo an end. The treaty was signed on Christmas Eve, 1814, although GenAndrew Jackson's famous defeat of the British at New Orleans occurredafter this. After his service in the Ohio Militia, John settled in SalemTownship where he appears in records for 1814 and 1815. John and hiswife then lived in Perry Township, Shelby Co, Ohio. from 1816 to at least1836. Their son, Joseph Coe was born there in 1816. John is listed inthe 1920 Census for Shelby County, Ohio with family. His wife Esther diedabout 1824. He remarried in Dec. 1824. John Hathaway is listed as acommissioner for the county on a document dated 6 June 1825 (History ofShelby County, Ohio). Between 1836 and 1839 John Hathaway moved hisfamily to Porter Co., Indiana. He is listed as a witness for JohnRobinson's will in Porter County, Indiana on 26 Dec. 1839. He died inPorter Indiana, sometime before 1840. Hathaways of America(1970:109-110).
