Ed Sherman Assigned to: Company K 162 Infantry Regiment 81stInfantry Brigade 41st Division (Sunset} I Corps The 41st Division was aNational Guard Division whose men were raised from Washington, Oregon,Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado, North Dakota, South Dakota, New Mexicoand the District of Columbia. Apparently because most of the men wereraised from western states, the division adopted the nickname, "Sunset"Division. The original Division commander was Maj. Gen. Hunter Liggett,although when he became commander of the I Corps, Brig. Gen. RobertAlexander replaced him. Its Headquarters arrived in France Dec. 31,1917. After it arrived, the 41st Division became a replacement unit, andwas designated as the 1st Depot Division, although it apparently alsocontinued to be referred to as the 41st Depot Division. It was one ofsix divisions that were part of I Corps. Gen. Alexander had to break upthe Division and send many of the troops of Liggett's original 41stDivision as replacements to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Divisions. Thereplacement depot for the 41st Division was based at Saint-Aignan(jokingly referred to as Saint Agony by troops) below Touraine (Pershing1931: 17; Stallings 1963: 182). St. Aignan was located within theIntermediate Section. After the armistice, St. Aignan became a clearingpoint for troops returning to the U.S. (1938: 445). This division was incharge of screening and sending forward replacements to the fightingbrigades. Pershing inspected the 41st Division at St. Aignan on Aug. 3,1918 (Pershing 1931: 202). Later, after Alexander was given a combatcommand, Brig. Gen. Eli K. Cole led the 41st. The 41st Divisionsuffered 93 deaths and 315 wounded. Brigadier Gen. Robert Lee Bullardset up infantry schools in the Gondrecourt area Trained and stationed at1st Corp School at Gondrecourt (Lorraine country), south of theSaint-Mihiel salient-Sgt. Hathaway was there March 4, 1918. At this timethere was only about 325,000 Doughboys in all of France (43). By May 10there were 488,224 troops in England and France (Pershing 1931: 46).Sgt. Rudolph Hathaway served as an instructor while in France. He wascategorized as a sharpshotter and helped train American troops for thefront. His brother, Lt Mark Hathaway, also served in France.
