CALAMAR is the name of our farm, located on the northernmost edge of the Olympic Peninsula, near the village of Sequim ... "on the Sunny Side of the Strait," in western Washington State...the OTHER Washington.
Situated in the Dungeness River Valley and just south of the Strait of Juan de Fuca (which runs between Washington State and Vancouver Island, Canada), we benefit from a unique situation known as a rainshadow. Our valley is nestled up against the Olympic Mountains, and as the precipitation comes in from the Pacific, the Olympics split it and most of it goes right around us. We have an average of less than 20" of annual rainfall, though we are only about 50 miles from the Hoh Rain Forest, where they get as much as 165 inches of rainfall per year!
The Dungeness River provides our area with incredibly pure and ample irrigation water. Without that irrigation, our beautiful green valley would be a desert. We actually have a cactus which grows wild here, and would thrive if not over-watered by irrigation!
In May of each year, the Sequim Irrigation Festival celebrates the arrival of the irrigation to our Valley over a hundred years ago, and our Festival is the longest continuously running annual community celebration in our state.
We're grateful for the many miracles Mother Nature sends to us each year, here in the Dungeness Valley. We do our best to humor Her...and we're happy She's on our side!
We highly recommend Animal Den
for a great selection of horsey and doggy gift items!
